Alberta Corporation Annual Return vs. T2: What Business Owners Should Know

Annual Return and T2 are not the same filing

If you operate a corporation in Alberta, it is important to distinguish your provincial corporate-registry obligations from your federal corporate income-tax obligations.

Alberta corporate Annual Return

An Alberta corporation has corporate-registry obligations that help keep its registration information current and maintain its corporate status. The Annual Return is a provincial corporate filing; it is not your income tax return.

T2 corporate income tax return

The T2 is the corporate income tax return filed with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Resident corporations generally have a T2 filing obligation for each tax year, including in many cases when there is no tax payable.

Why the distinction matters

Completing one filing does not automatically complete the other. Keeping a compliance calendar for both corporate-registry and tax deadlines can help prevent missed filings.

En español: Si tienes una corporación en Alberta, la Annual Return corporativa y la declaración de impuestos T2 son obligaciones diferentes. Una corresponde al registro corporativo provincial y la otra a las obligaciones fiscales federales ante CRA.
